A letter to Obama

Dear Mr. President,

As I put my babies to bed,

I say a little prayer, in gratitude.

Hug them a little tighter…

For all the things that’s wrong with my country,

It never struck me to worry about them being shot down at their school…

And it wouldn’t have crossed the minds of the parents who lost their kids at all those school massacres…

Yet, this happened on your watch, Mr. President.

As you said in your speech at Newtown,

“ I’ve been reflecting on this the last few days, and if we’re honest with ourselves, the answer’s no. We’re not doing enough. And we will have to change.

Since I’ve been president, this is the fourth time we have come together to comfort a grieving community torn apart by mass shootings, fourth time we’ve hugged survivors, the fourth time we’ve consoled the families of victims.”

“In the coming weeks, I’ll use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens, from law enforcement, to mental health professionals, to parents and educators, in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this, because what choice do we have? We can’t accept events like this as routine.

Are we really prepared to say that we’re powerless in the face of such carnage, that the politics are too hard?

Are we prepared to say that such violence visited on our children year after year after year is somehow the price of our freedom?”

You said this… so now what?

There comes a time in everyone’s life when their character is measured.

When what they stand for truly comes to the fore,

Some rise to the occasion. Some don’t.

And this makes all the difference between Great and good and sometimes good and mediocre.

So what’s it going to be, Mr. President?

I wrote this piece for you when you first became President

So are you going to be the President I thought you could be?

Are you going to be known as the first President who took on the NRA and succeeded?

Or are you going to be just another feckless politician mouthing empty condolences?

So what’s it going to be, Mr. President?

Great or just good…

It’s time to make your choice.

Make it count.

  1. Nicely written Maya. You echo the sentiments of millions of parents who feel strongly against
Gun control. The President has his work cut out for him. God bless the President and the United States of America.
